Biographical/Historical note
Lillian Lyons Galt (1916) was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to Robert Barnes Galt and Elizabeth Clark Galt. After her parents were divorced, Lillian and her brother moved with their mother to New Orleans, Louisiana, to live with Elizabeth's mother. Lillian went to school in the New Orleans area, and in 1938 she received degrees in philosophy and psychology from Newcomb College. During her college days she met her husband Fountaine, who also attended Tulane, and after graduation they were married (1939). In 1948 Lillian, Fountaine, and their three children moved to New York, where Fountaine got a job working with what is now known as Mobil Oil Company. For the next twenty years Lillian kept her days full with children and volunteer work, which included the children's theater and a local psychiatric clinic. In 1974, after retiring and taking a round-the-world trip, Fountaine and Lillian moved back to New Orleans. They also bought a dairy farm in Vermont where they went to get away from the humidity and heat of Louisiana. Lillian became interested in her family history when her husband began looking into his own ancestral background. However, the idea of tracing family roots was not new to Lillian; her mother was fond of her family's past and helped to preserve the artifacts and memories of the Clarke/Lyons clan. Lillian spent many years researching documents and compiling knowledge of her ancestry. The manifestations of her efforts appeared with the publishing of "John Hardie Thornhill and his Family" (1988) and "Lewis Strong Clarke and his wife Lillian Keene Lyons and their families, ancestors, and descendants" (1991).
