Scope and Contents note

"The Arcade," Newcomb's literary magazine, was published from January 1909 to June 1934. Generally, there are three or four volumes published a year. "The Arcade" falls into two divisions: the first section consists of various poems and prose (both academic essays and fiction) written by students, while the second section is composed of news articles such as "Of College Interest," "Of Alumnae Interest," and editorials written by alumnae, students, and faculty. Advertisements from businesses like Adler's Jeweler's and Maison Blanche display goods desired by "Newcomb girls"; woodcuts, line drawings, and cover illustrations reveal the visual talents of these students. "The Arcade" is a valuable source of information about student and alumnae attitudes towards education, art, conduct in life, and student/alumnae relations that the collegiate literature consisted of in the early twentieth-century.
