Biographical/Historical note
Janice Torre was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. She graduated from Newcomb Art School in 1936, studied scene design at the Yale Drama School, and then courses in playwriting and directing at the University of Texas.
Following her formal education, Torre moved to Hollywood where she met composer Fred Spielman. Forming a partnership, Spielman and Torre began writing songs for motion picture musicals.
In 1949, Torre married Gregory Manning Perky and settled with him in New Orleans, where he taught physics and chemistry at the Isidore Newman School. While living in New Orleans, Janice Torre continued to collaborate with Fred Spielman. Most of the score for "THE STINGIEST MAN IN TOWN" was written for television through their collaboration, in spite of the fact that they were 1,300 miles apart.
