Biographical/Historical note
Rita Ann Curry was born Feb. 5, 1942, in Alice, Texas, to William Paul Curry and Bertha Helen Curry (maiden name Comford). She was married to James L. Hingle Jr. (born 11/08/1940) on Aug. 25, 1962. They had four children and later divorced. She remarried on Nov. 12, 1997 to Michael E. Pittman, Ph. D. (born 11/28/1939). Mrs. Pittman currently resides in Kenner, Louisiana. She is a micro-shell collector. She has researched Newcomb history, focusing mostly on Newcomb embroidery and family history. She also gives lectures, teaches embroidery, and teaches sewing.
Scope and Contents note
This collection contains materials related to Newcomb artists, clippings, and bio information. The clippings, which take up the first two boxes, range from the 1890s to 1925. They concern many aspects of Newcomb history, including Mrs. Newcomb’s death and Newcomb art. The collection also contains various drafts of a chapter on Newcomb embroidery, which was to be the donor’s contribution to the Newcomb Anthology. However, Pittman withdrew her participation in the project, so this chapter was never published. Along with this unpublished work are various handwritten and electronic notes and correspondences regarding Pittman’s research, text and imagery from slide presentations, and a cataloge of Newcomb embroidery.
Arrangement note
The materials have been arranged into three storage boxes. All original newsprint has been photocopied and placed into acid-free folders. The first two boxes contain news clippings relevant to Newcomb arts and crafts, Newcomb history, and other relevant documents collected by the donor. The third box was added later and contains items more specific to the donor herself: a partially drafted book chapter on Newcomb embroidery and other materials relevant to her writing process. All attempts were made to maintain the original order of the documents as they were when donated.

The inventory list for boxes 1 and 2 need verification; it was provided by the donor. It consists of one combined list of the news clippings in chronological order. A paper copy can be found in box 1 of the collection and the list has been added to this finding aid. However, as stated above, it has not yet been verified and includes information from both boxes 1 and 2 combined.
