Scope and Contents note

Having been a chemistry instructor at Newcomb between 1932 and 1936 and a research assistant at Tulane between 1936 and 1938, Riley has retained an interest in Newcomb College, being involved in searches for Deans, and keeping in contact with her former students. This collection of papers pans the years between 1932 and 1989, with the bulk of the material dating from the thirties. Included is correspondence, clippings, invitations for mardi gras balls and other events, information about her husband, Herbert Parks Riley (who also taught at Newcomb/ Tulane from 1934 to 1938), and eight photographs of friends and family (removed to photograph collection). Items of interest within this collection include a letter from Dorothy Seago (2/12/40), and another to Marie Weiss, Newcomb mathematics professor, mapping out a plan to nominate her for the deanship in 1948. Other individuals who significantly contribute to the correspondence include Rose Mooney Slade (of whom there are also several photos), Ruth Benerito, and Margaret Strange Klapper (both former students). Clippings reflect information about herself, former students, and Newcomb College.
