Biographical/Historical note

Born in New Orleans in 1888, Robinson attended Newcomb College (Class of 1909) and graduated with the intention of becoming a doctor or an actress. Though she abandoned these goals with her marriage in 1911, her later civic efforts helped her achieve notoriety and help others at the same time. She was the mother of five children.

Scope and Contents note

Martha Gilmore Robinson’s life was one of commitment to improving and preserving the historic sites of Louisiana, especially in the Vieux Carré of New Orleans, her birth city. Her accomplishments include founding and organizing Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carré, presiding as president of the Louisiana Landmarks Society, being a member of the Place Pontalba Commission for Gallier Hall, and vice chair of the Battle of New Orleans Sesquicentennial Celebration Commission. Her contributions were recognized and respected by others, as shown by the 18 certificates, the plaques, and the award pins collected here. An especially important recognition came in 1963, with the Crowninshield Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation; it was for superlative achievement in the preservation of sites important to American history and culture. The certificate, endorsements, congratulations, and trophy from this award are included here. Also, the collection’s assorted clippings, 24 photographs, and a sketch, round out the record of a great woman’s achievements.
