Biographical/Historical note
Schafer was a longtime member of the faculty for the department of history at Tulane University, as well as a Newcomb class of 1963 graduate, who specialized in American legal history, U.S. Southern history, and the legal history of slavery. Schaefer received her Ph. D. from Tulane in 1985. She is the author of "Brothels, Depravity, and Abandoned Women: Illegal Sex in Antebellum New Orleans," published in 2009, "Becoming Free and Remaining Free: Manumission and Enslavement in New Orleans, 1846-1862," published in 2003, and "Slavery, Civil Law, and the Supreme Court of Louisiana," published in 1997.
