Scope and Contents note

The bulk of this collection consists of manuscripts and papers saved and donated by Sheila Tobias; they are in exquisite order. The Sheila Tobias Collection of books contains personal notes in Sheila Tobias’s hand. Also, many of the books are signed by the author and/or inscribed by or to Sheila Tobias.

The material, which covers the period from 1978 to 1999, may be helpful to researchers interested in the education of women, the education of women in math and the sciences, pedagogical debates, the writing and teaching styles of Sheila Tobias, the writing process, or the feminist personal library.

Organization and Arrangement

The materials are separated into three boxes. One box contains manuscript drafts of Tobias’s books. They are organized chronologically. A second box contains published periodicals and booklets, organized alphabetically. The third box contains miscellaneous papers, articles, notes, syllabi, etc. Every effort was made to preserve the order in which the latter materials were donated. There is also a Sheila Tobias Collection of catalogued books. They are currently on display, and when moved will continue to be non-circulating. They are marked with bookplates indicating that they were gifts of Sheila Tobias. They are organized by Library of Congress order. The assigned numbers can be found on identifying strips in pencil on the copyright page. For a listing of the books in the collection, see the library donation.
