James Alm: “Reforming the Tax System: Possibilities and Prospects”
Friday, September 2, now at 12 pm at the Anna Many Lounge, Caroline Richardson Building (2nd Floor)

James Alm will discuss current issues surrounding reform of the U.S. tax system, focusing on such questions as: should the current income tax be reformed, what are the basic features of the many tax reform proposals that have been put forth, what are the likely effects of some of these reforms (e.g., who will win and who will lose, will reform increase economic growth, will reform simplify taxes, is reform feasible?), what are lessons from tax reforms around the world, and what form should an “ideal” tax reform taxation take? Lunch is provided for those staying for the talk. Email  jmulvihi@tulane.edu with any questions.

2. Newcomb Scholars Information Sessions

6. The Newcomb Feminist Film Series Presents: “Miss Representation” with special guest speaker Dr. Celeste Lay
Friday, September 16, 7 pm, Freeman Auditorium, Woldenberg Art Center

Join us for the first screening of the Newcomb Feminist Film Series’ fall line-up! We will be showing “Miss Representation,” with special guest speaker Dr. Celeste Lay. In this provocative, of-the-moment film, Writer/Director Jennifer Siebel Newsom interweaves stories from teenage girls with provocative interviews from the likes of Dr. Condoleezza Rice, Lisa Ling, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Rosario Dawson, Dr. Jackson Katz, Dr. Jean Kilbourne, and Gloria Steinem to give us an inside look at the media and its messages for and about women today.

As the most persuasive and pervasive force of communication in our culture, media is educating yet another generation that a woman’s primary value lay in her youth, beauty and sexuality—and not in her capacity as a leader, making it difficult for women to obtain leadership positions and for girls to reach their full potential. To view the trailer, visit: http://www.missrepresentation.org/home.html.

This event is sponsored by Newcomb College Institute and Newcomb-Tulane College. Following the film screening there will be a Q&A with Dr. Lay. Email nsp@tulane.edu or call 504-865-5422 with any questions.
