1.Fridays at Newcomb: Felicia McCarren, “French hip hop: cultural politics and minority identities in la danse urbaine”
Friday, December 2, 12 -1 pm, Anna Many Lounge, Caroline Richardson Building
For
more than two decades, le hip-hop has shown France’s “other” face:
danced by minorities associated with immigration and the suburbs, it has
channeled rage against racism and unequal opportunity and offered a
movement vocabulary for the expression of the multicultural difference
that challenges the universalist discourse of the Republic. Join us for
Dr. McCarren’s talk on her forthcoming book on the relations between
popular culture and concert dance in France. Lunch will be provided for
those staying for the talk. Email
nsp@tulane.edu with questions.

1. IX Annual Tulane Undergraduate Conference on Latin America
Sat., Dec. 3, 9:00 AM – 2:30 PM
Jones Hall, Rooms 102 and 108
The
Stone Center's annual TUCLA conference is an interdisciplinary
undergraduate symposium in which seniors from the Latin American Studies
core seminar present their original, individual research projects.
TUCLA was formally launched in Fall of 2003 as a means to provide Latin
American Studies undergraduates with an opportunity to present papers in
the style and atmosphere of an academic conference. The conference is
designed to enlist all of Tulane's Latin American Studies seniors in a
shared discussion of the region, its society and its cultures. Please
join us for the ninth annual conference this Saturday. This event is
free and open to the public. TUCLA is sponsored by the Stone
Center for Latin American Studies. For more information please contact
Edie Wolfe,
ewolfe@tulane.edu.
2. Seniors: MATCH CORPS
Recruitment
is currently under way for a great one-year fellowship in Boston for
students interested in tutoring and teaching at an inner-city
school. Typically after the year, fellows go on to top grad schools
or become full-time teachers in high-need schools. The MATCH Corps is a
one-year Urban Education fellowship program. It is possibly the most
competitive such program in the nation, more competitive than admission
to the Harvard Graduate School of Education or Teach for America.
Elite recent college graduates from excellent universities across the
country commit one year to public service in Boston. They are assigned
6-7 MATCH students at the beginning of the year, with whom they work in
small group or 1-on-1 tutorials over the course each day, doing close
academic support and building relationships. They receive housing and a
modest living stipend. After that, some go into teaching; some to med
school and law school; and others get involved in public policy. For
