Fridays at Newcomb: White Gloves, Pearls, and Pig Farms: The Other Civil Rights Activists of the 1960s
Friday, March 15, 12pm-1pm
Caroline Richardson Building, Anna Many Lounge
This talk will examine the history of the behind-the-scenes
activism of middle class black and white women of the National Council
of Negro Women. Unlike the more public, highly-visible, and
confrontational tactics of more well-known civil rights activists, these
women worked privately to provide funding and support to more radical,
grassroots-based activism in Mississippi throughout the 1960s. Rebecca
Tuuri is visiting assistant professor of history at Tulane
University.

Writer, broadcaster, and speaker Paul Tough is one of the country’s

extensively about education, poverty and politics, including cover
stories on charter schools, the Harlem Children's Zone, and the No Child
Left Behind program. Tough’s message carries special resonance in New
Orleans, which has taken center stage in the education reform movement
since Katrina. Free and open to the public, with a book-signing and
reception to follow. Sponsored by the Newcomb-Tulane College Office of
Cocurricular Programs, the NewDay Speaker Series, the Office of Academic
Affairs, and the Center for Public Service. For more information, visit
