The Cure: The History and Culture of Breast Cancer: A discussion with Professor Bernadette Wegenstein

Tuesday, November 6, 6pm
Anna Many Lounge, Caroline Richardson Building

This scholarly lecture focuses on the history of breast cancer and patient stories with visual examples from Professor Wegenstein’s documentary film, The Cure. From early diagnosis to the full treatment of breast cancer—The Cure follows five patients and their medical staff at a top U.S. breast care clinic. The film recounts the transformation of breast cancer from the first disfiguring radical mastectomy in the late 19th century to today’s patient-driven medicine, where cancer meets the beauty industry, and where the loss of a breast is today celebrated as sacrifice and rebirth.

Bernadette Wegenstein is a Research Professor at the Johns Hopkins University, where she also directs the Center for Advanced Media Studies. Her latest book is The Cosmetic Gaze: Body Modification and the Construction of Beauty, (MIT Press, 2012). Her current documentary project, The Cure, brings together her expertise on the history of the body and makeover culture with her passion for the  character-driven cinéma vérité genre.
