When: Saturday, September 3, 5:00 pm-7:00 pm

Join Tulane Professor Melissa Harris-Perry as she talks about her new book. Sister Citizen: Shame, Stereotypes and Black Women in America. The book looks at black women’s political and emotional responses to pervasive negative race and gender images. Not a traditional political science work, Sister Citizen explores how African American women understand themselves as citizens and what they expect from political organizing. Harris-Perry shows that the shared struggle to preserve an authentic self and secure recognition as a citizen links together black women in America, from the anonymous survivors of Hurricane Katrina to the current First Lady of the United States. Sister Citizen will be sold and signed at the event.

Melissa Harris-Perry is the founding director of the Anna Julia Cooper Project on Gender, Race, and Politics in the South, housed at the Newcomb College Institute.

Friday, September 16, 7 pm, Freeman Auditorium, Woldenberg Art Center

Join us for the first screening of the Newcomb Feminist Film Series’ fall line-up! We will be showing “Miss Representation,” with special guest speaker Dr. Celeste Lay. In this provocative, of-the-moment film, Writer/Director Jennifer Siebel Newsom interweaves stories from teenage girls with provocative interviews from the likes of Dr. Condoleezza Rice, Lisa Ling, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Rosario Dawson, Dr. Jackson Katz, Dr. Jean Kilbourne, and Gloria Steinem to give us an inside look at the media and its messages for and about women today.

As the most persuasive and pervasive force of communication in our culture, media is educating yet another generation that a woman’s primary value lay in her youth, beauty and sexuality—and not in her capacity as a leader, making it difficult for women to obtain leadership positions and for girls to reach their full potential. To view the trailer, visit: http://www.missrepresentation.org/home.html.

This event is sponsored by Newcomb College Institute and Newcomb-Tulane College. Following the film screening there will be a Q&A with Dr. Lay. Email nsp@tulane.edu or call 504-865-5422 with any questions.
