4. WYSE (Women and Youth Supporting Each Other) is back and recruiting new mentors for the 2011-2012 school year
Application Deadline: September 10
WYSE
is a curriculum based mentoring program for middle school girls. We work
with anywhere from 10-20 girls from a local middle school and hold
weekly sessions on a variety of topics such as sex, body image, healthy
and unhealthy relationships, future options, discrimination, etc. Each
mentor is assigned 1-2 girls with whom they can form a closer
relationship and communicate outside of the weekly school sessions. In
addition, we form a cohesive group of mentors that bonds and supports
one another. We hold our school sessions once a week where we do group
activities centered around one topic. Mentors also take their mentees
out on outings at least once a month—outings can range from anything
from going to a museum or movie to making cookies or going to Audubon
Zoo with the mentee. In addition, we have four special events throughout
the year. These include activities such as exploring future options,
attending a museum or play, doing a scavenger hunt or art project, or
any number of fun activities. The approximate weekly time commitment is
about 4 hours on a week that does not have a special event.
Please email
tulanewyse@gmail.com for an application (DUE DATE: SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 10) or if you have any questions!

Friday, September 16, 7 pm, Freeman Auditorium, Woldenberg Art Center
Join
us for the first screening of the Newcomb Feminist Film Series’ fall
line-up! We will be showing “Miss Representation,” with special guest
speaker Dr. Celeste Lay. In this provocative, of-the-moment film,
Writer/Director Jennifer Siebel Newsom interweaves stories from teenage
girls with provocative interviews from the likes of Dr. Condoleezza
Rice, Lisa Ling, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Rosario
Dawson, Dr. Jackson Katz, Dr. Jean Kilbourne, and Gloria Steinem to give
us an inside look at the media and its messages for and about women
today.
As
the most persuasive and pervasive force of communication in our
culture, media is educating yet another generation that a woman’s
primary value lay in her youth, beauty and sexuality—and not in her
capacity as a leader, making it difficult for women to obtain leadership
positions and for girls to reach their full potential. To view the
trailer, visit:
http://www.missrepresentation.org/home.html.
This
event is sponsored by Newcomb College Institute and Newcomb-Tulane
College. Following the film screening there will be a Q&A with Dr.
Lay. Email
