When is Orientation?

Orientation will take place during the first month of the school year. Students will not be required to report early, but should plan to be present on the first day of class for your school.

For which classes am I required to register?
You will need to register for two classes (one Lecture and one Lab):

            1.  NAVS 101 Lecture

              NAVS 101-01            TR            0800-0915

2.  NAVS 101 Lab

              NAVS 101-41            TR            0700-0750

Classes are listed on the following site: http://classschedule.tulane.edu/

Liberal Arts/Business Majors: The desired number of credits for the first semester should be approximately 14-18 credits. Though Calculus and Physics are required for scholarship students and those desiring to earn a scholarship (with the exception of all Marine Options), DO NOT TAKE CALCULUS AND PHYSICS AT THE SAME TIME unless you think you may want to switch into engineering. Plan to take Calculus in the freshman year and Physics in the sophomore year. A typical first semester would be:

Calculus I
Naval Science
English 101
General Studies (History, Political Science, Psychology, etc.)
Language

Engineering Majors: The required number of credits for the first semester will be approximately 18-21 credits. You can expect to have a heavy course load such as this for six out of the eight semesters at Tulane University. A typical first semester would be:

Calculus I
Physics I and lab
Chem I and lab
Naval Science and lab
English 101 or Computer Science 101
Engineering Tides

If I am at a cross-town school (Loyola, UNO, Xavier, Dillard), will these courses cost me any extra money?
No, you can find these courses in your own university course catalog. Register for them with your university and we will receive notice that you are registered. In the first week of school, you must complete a Consortium Form from your school's registrar's office. Take this form to the Tulane registrar, and they will complete your registration process.

Do I really need my original Birth Certificate?
Yes.  We need to verify your citizenship by reviewing a certified birth certificate.  This is a birth certificate with a raised seal of some sort.  If you only have a copy of your BC, this is not acceptable.  We recommend you write/call the city hall at your place of birth to obtain an official copy.  Once we have confirmed the raised seal and photocopied your birth certificate, we will return it to you.

A Driver's License or Military ID cannot be used in lieu of a certified birth certificate.  ALL incoming freshmen must have their birth certificate reviewed.

Will the university hold any boxes/mail that I send to myself?
If you are constrained by airline requirements and cannot pack everything you need for college, we recommend a few options.  There are the typical general needs stores available here in New Orleans (Target, Wal-Mart, K-Mart).  You could purchase needed items upon your arrival.  You can also ship a maximum of two boxes to the NROTC unit.  We will hold these items here in the building.  The address:

Scholarship Students:
Do I need to pay the $300 deposit that Tulane requires?
YES, pay the deposit to ensure you have a spot at the school. This deposit will be credited to you in late fall (Oct.-Nov.).

Do I live with other ROTC students?
No, you will follow the room assignment process just like all other new incoming students. So go ahead and look at all of the material that Tulane provides for you and make your decision from there. If you do have rooming questions, please address them to the university.

I’m getting a tuition bill, should I pay it?
NO, NO, NO! You will get several bills in the mail that indicate you must pay by a certain deadline. Ignore these bills. Your tuition, room, board and fees will be paid for by the Navy in mid-September. Your bill will then reflect this. The only fee that you should be concerned with is the health insurance fee (~$1,500). You must sign a card that indicates that you do not need/want health insurance and this fee will be removed from your bill (i.e. you are still covered under your parents’ insurance). If you need this insurance, you must pay for it.

How much money will I need to start off the school year?

While scholarship students are authorized a $375 book stipend, the stipend will not arrive until 4-6 weeks into the school year.  Additionally, $375 does not always cover the entire amount you might spend on books.  Therefore, you need to be prepared to pay at least a small portion of your book costs.

Just as the book stipend does not "kick in" right away, it will take about a month before scholarship student’s monthly, non-taxable, $250 subsistence allowance arrives in your bank account. Therefore, you must make appropriate plans in order to be able to purchase any basic items that will satisfy your immediate needs up to the point that your stipend arrives.

Do I need a bank account?
Good Question!  You will absolutely need to have a bank account in order to get your midshipman stipend.  You can open an account at your parents’ bank or open an account at a New Orleans bank.  The banks near campus are Whitney and Hibernia Bank.  You could also go for a bank that is national and/or doesn't have a specific location.  For example, if either of your parents are/were in the military service, you could use USAA.

You will need to check with the banks themselves in order to find out the procedure for opening an account from a distance.   You may be able to do a majority of an application to open an account online using internet banking and simply send in a check for the initial deposit.  You will need to get the banks routing number so that you can fill in the DDS (Direct Deposit) form that is part of the packet.

What meal plan should I choose?
The meal plan included with Tulane’s waiver (for scholarship students) of room and board is Carte Blanche Plus 100.  You can read more about this meal plan at http://www.diningservices.tulane.edu/.  Other meal plans are available, but if you choose a plan that is greater in price than the one that the waiver covers, you will have to pay the difference out of pocket.

When will I get reimbursed for my travel to school and how does that work?
Reimbursement will occur within 4-6 weeks of your arrival. For those who drove, you will need to record your approximate mileage to complete the paperwork for your reimbursement.  For those flying, you will need a receipt and an itinerary to complete your paperwork.
