ANTH 684 Beginning Kaqchikel (Maya) Language (3)
Prof. Maxwell. Kaqchikel is one of the four largest Mayan groups in Guatemala,
having over a million self-identified members, about half of whom speak their
native mother tongue. Taught in three Kaqchikel communities in Guatemala, this
six week course enables students to achieve conversational fluency and
elementary reading/writing skills.
ANTH 687 Kaqchikel (Maya) Culture (3)
Prof. Maxwell. Corequisite: ANTH 684 or equivalent. Contemporary culture
practices of the Kaqchikel in four communities of Guatemala will be examined as
exemplary of the processes of cultural revitalization, integration into national and
local political arenas, participation in world markets, and interaction with world
religions. Culture practitioners will participate as facilitators and guest speakers.
ANTH 688 Writing Practicum (1)
Staff. Corequisite: three-credit departmental course. Prerequisite: successful
completion of the First-Year Writing Requirement. Fulfills the college intensive-
writing requirement.
