FACULTY

Robert E. Mecklenburg, DDS, MPH serves as a consultant to the NCI in health policy and administration with a focus on expanding dental involvement in creating a tobacco-free society. He served as the Chief Dental Officer of the Public Health Service from 1981 to 1987. Dr. Mecklenburg is currently a World Health Organization consultant.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS

This course is approved by the Academy of General Dentistry for up to 4 Continuing Education Credits for Part I and as many as 7.5 credits for Parts I & II.

 

ACCOMMODATIONS

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The National Cancer Institute developed this two day training program to teach dentists, dental hygienists, assistants, and office managers simple, effective methods for helping their patients become tobacco-free. Cessation methods advocated have been scientifically demonstrated to be effective when routinely used in a variety of clinical practice settings. The recommended methods can be easily integrated into regular clinical operation.

The Friday afternoon and Saturday morning sessions focus on clinical oral health team organization, services, and follow-up. The comprehensive training address:

1. both smoking and smokeless tobacco

2. cessation and prevention, and

3. professional services to the profession, the community, and the clinic.

The Saturday morning program prepares clinicians and public health educators to teach the methods presented during the session.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

 

CLINICIANS’ ROLES:

HELPING PEOPLE TO BE TOBACCO-FREE

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:

1. KNOW why it is important to include tobacco use intervention services in the dental practice

2. GET READY by organizing the practice to ensure that simple, brief tobacco use prevention and cessation services are used routinely, efficiently, and systematically.

3. HELP PATIENTS be tobacco-free by:

ASKING questions about tobacco use,

ADVISING them of the advantages of being tobacco-free,

ASSISTING them in prevention and cessation activities,

ARRANGING appropriate follow-up.

4. FOLLOW THROUGH by:

- continuing to monitor patient’s tobacco use status and

help users become tobacco-free.

- promoting a tobacco-free lifestyle by personal example

and by working with the profession and the community.
