Sketching a spider is quite simple. Just think about what model you are trying to build, or what question you are asking and then draw the relationships between the variables. Here is one way to think of the question, "Does maternal education level have an association with child wt/age independent of socio-economic and environmental variables?" The variables that are involved in this model will be: maternal education, housing (roof), toilet, water supply, and a derived proxy for income.
Here you can see some of the spider's web of relationships in the model. There are additional influencing factors added in white boxes to show how there is a cascade of effects. There are many other factors that are not shown in this spider, but you can be as elaborate as you want when you start looking at your spider.
