Scatterplot:   Diarrhea Prevalence and Diarrhea Treatment by a Health Worker

1. From the SPSS data editor in the Bangladesh data set select Graph and then Scatter. Click on the box titled Simple and then Define.

2. For the y-axis select and move the variable diaprvfm, for the x-axis select and move the variable ditrhw and click on OK.

3.  Double click on the resulting graph to open the Chart Editor.  Under Chart, Options, choose the button for Case Labels, ON, and select the dot for Case number and click on OK.

It is often the case, as illustrated above, that the higher the access to service, the lower the prevalence of illness (in this case the prevalence of diarrhea and treatment of diarrhea by a health worker). This type of analysis provides indicators of targeting and coverage that are useful in program planning, evaluation, and redistribution of health services to ensure appropriate targeting to those most in need.

This information can be analyzed using a 2x2 table to determine 4 categories of health service coverage and disease (in this example diarrhea): high prevalence/low coverage, high prevalence/high coverage, low prevalence/low coverage, and low prevalence/high coverage. When limited resources limit the ability to increase health worker staff, redistribution can be used to insure that no district has high diarrhea prevalence and low health worker coverage.
