As can be seen, the percentage of income on food actually increases first for those that are very poor, andthen assumes the normal pattern for food consumption expenditure.   Certain commodities are required by society - committed expenditures such as clothes, which leaves little for food.  Thus, as income increases the houshold can spend proportionally more money on food.
