New Appointments in Philosophy
  • David Shoemaker, Ph.D. University of California, Irvine, 1996.
    Department of Philosophy & Murphy Institute
    Prof. Shoemaker comes to us from Bowling Green State University, where he was a Senior Research Fellow of the Social Philosophy and Policy Center. He is the author of Personal Identity and Ethics: A Brief Introduction (Broadview Press).
  • Weatherhead Chair in Philosophy:
    Richard Velkley, PhD Pennsylvania State University, 1978.
    Before coming to Tulane, Prof. Velkley taught at The Catholic University of America. He is the author of Freedom and the End of Reason: On the Moral Foundation of Kant's Critical Philosophy (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1989) and Being after Rousseau: Philosophy and Culture in Question (Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 2002).
  • Alison Denham, D. Phil. Oxford 1989.
    Before coming to Tulane Prof. Denham was a Fellow in Philosophy at St Anne's College, University of Oxford. She is the author of Metaphor and Moral Experience: an essay in the psychology of value (Oxford University Press, 2000)
Visiting Faculty Appointments
  • Jonathan Anomaly, Ph.D. Tulane University, 2006.
    During the past two years, Prof. Anomaly held a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Philosophy, Policy and Law at the University of Virginia.
  • Michael Madary, PhD Tulane 2007.
    Prof. Madary was previously a Teaching Associate in the Dept. of Philosophy at the University of Bristol.
Murphy Institute

Tulane is home to The Murphy Institute of Political Economy, which offers an undergraduate program in political economy and supports PPE: A Journal of Politics, Philosophy, and Economics. The Philosophy Department is closely connected with the Murphy Institute’s Center for Ethics and Public Affairs, which provides faculty and graduate fellowships and sponsors an active lecture series.
John Howard, who is Associate Director of the Murphy Institute and teaches courses in the philosophy department, was awarded the 2007 Mortar Board Award for Excellence in Non-Tenured Teaching.
