CANDIDATE SELECTION AND ASSESSMENT

 

I. Selection of Candidates

A. Desirable Characteristics of Candidates

  1. Academically sound, sufficient quantitative skills.
  2. Recommended by at least 3 referees, including current employer.
  3. Sponsored by public health agency.
  4. Committed to public health practice (may be determined by interview).

B. Attraction of Candidates

  1. Advertise in the media.
  2. Publish brochure.
  3. Word of mouth.

C. Selection of Candidates

All candidates reviewed by joint MoH and UZ Advisory Committee. Selection follows normal University procedures.

 

II. Assessment

A. University Regulations

Continuous Assessment 33%
Dissertation 25%
Final exam 42%

B. Goals of Continuous Assessment

  1. Guide teachers in identifying needs of students.
  2. Guide students in identifying their needs.
  3. Prevent students coming to final exam ill- prepared.

 

C. Components of continuous assessment

Measure performance in class work and field work. May be weighted differently to reflect relative importance. Should be roughly proportional to the time spent by candidates in each activity. Class work assessment: assignments, exams, presentations and case analyses. Checklist of tasks to be achieved on field assignments:

D. Who performs continuous assessment?

Field work: assessed by field supervisors and Field Coordinator
Class work: assessed by academic faculty

III. Dissertation

Field-based research in essential public health problem. May be extension of prior field project. Include identification of problem in the field and action taken to solve problem: application of method.

IV. Final Exam

Will be oriented toward testing ability to solve practical public health problems. To be designed and administered by University. Relative weights of the components to be determined by Department Board.
