We are showing our projects on March 10, 2001, in the lobby of the Lindy Boggs Center for Engineering and Biotechnology on the Tulane University uptown campus, from 1 to 3 in the afternoon. The public is welcome.

Our client lives with muscular dystrophy in her small apartment. Her limited leg and arm function requires a
power wheelchair to move about. Her feet and ankles swell and pain her because she can't move or elevate
her legs. We are designing a mechanical stool that will raise and lower her feet and legs. The stool will
be portable, useable with her chair, and controlled by a hand held device. We expect this simple approach
to improve her comfort.

Our client must often call for assistance to do many office tasks. His spinal injury took away full use of
his hands. He finds it difficult to manipulate bulky legal files, computer, and telephone simultaneously.
One nagging problem is needing help pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL to log onto a secure network. Our solution is a
combination of hardware and software that organizes the space and provides both support and access
functions. With this system he will be able to function without having to call for assistance.

Our client is a paraplegic, wheelchair using grandmother. Arthritis in her left shoulder makes it impossible
to transfer independently between her bed and wheelchair. Our team is designing a horizontal and vertically
translating lift using a track system to enable this transfer. We expect to provide our client independence
by enabling her movement between her chair and bed.

Our client lives in a large city and must cross busy streets or travel sidewalks full of pedestrians in his
manual wheelchair. We are designing and building a warning system that he has described. This system is
modular and will have lights to make him visible, a proximity detector and audio annunciator to alert
pedestrians of his presence, and a flasher/siren to call for help in an emergency. The control panel
provides for easy operation, and rechargeable batteries provide the power. This system should enable both
easier and safer travel.

The Goonies
Our client has fallen several times and cannot get up because she has limited use of one leg. She can scoot
along the floor to call a friend or neighbor to come and help, but this is an imposition that she prefers to
avoid. We are designing a seat that she can mount from the floor. This seat will then rise to the height
of a chair, a level from which she can stand. Our design should help restore her independence and dignity.

Descendants of the Dragon
Our client designs commercial art on his home computer. He is a wheelchair-user with limited reach or use
of his arms. His condition limits access to a printer, scanner, mouse, keyboard, and his collection of
media. Also, his ventilator tubes dangle and hang up as he moves around. Our design integrates a number of
off-the-shelf items to enhance office productivity. These will provide the access and control he needs to
work efficiently and independently.

Our client, who had polio as a teenager, is now a wheelchair user. She has only partial motor control of
her legs and prefers to sit with her right crossed over her left. This leg often loses feeling due to the
pressure that it experiences. Currently, our client is unable to alleviate her discomfort without
assistance. We are designing a battery-powered system including a pump and inflatable bladders that will
allow her to reposition her legs to restore circulation. Our design should enable our client to handle her
problem independently.

Our client is a mature woman who uses a walker for stability and for transferring goods to and from her
house. Shoulder pain limits her progress, particularly on high friction surfaces, because she can't lift a
loaded walker. We are adding a power assist to a conventional walker. With this addition, our client
should be able to transport at least two bags of groceries and herself over concrete surfaces and up ramps.

Our client, Mrs. K., teaches a special education class of autistic children. She works with the children to
improve their communication and social interaction skills. We are designing a stage to support Mrs. K.'s
use of puppets in role playing. This stage must be rugged, big enough for a number of children to use at
the same time, store compactly with its accessories contained, and portable. This stage will provide a
venue for the students to practice their skills and a way to take their show "on the road" to neighboring
classrooms.
