Biomedical Engineering Teams
and Projects 2002-2003
The teams will present their projects to the public in a showing on Saturday, March 15, 2003, from 1 to 3pm. Boggs Center Lobby, Tulane Uptown Campus.
These projects are supported by the Joe W. and Dorothy Dorsett
Brown Foundation.
The Bonobos
Missy Banitt, Jen Berumen, Darryl Dickerson, Meghana Kamath
Our client is a family with a two year old who has cerebral palsy.
We are designing a system that provides postural support for play
and bathing.
Team LIT
Lorey Flick, Carlos Haro, Scott Wheeler, Amber Williams
Parkinson's disease has severely limited the independence of our 60
year old client. We are designing a chair that will enable her to
sit and stand independently. Attachments will assist activities
such as eating.
White Noise
Curtis Humphrey, Jorge Nagel, Michael Palazzolo, Albert Stolz
Our client has quadriplegia that prevents normal use of a computer
joystick. We are designing an alternative input system that will
enable him to practice or play interactive games.
Team Odyssey
Sara Rumancik, Brad Smith, Jeff Ventimiglia, Andrew Voyiadjis
Patients of a brain injury rehabilitation center may overturn their
own wheelchairs because of large, uncontrolled motor movements. We
are making an antitip system that will reduce the risk of
capsizing. The system is able to be fit to different chairs and
allow approach by the staff and permit passage through doorways.
Princesses of Power
Megan Mickal, Margo Snyder, Alycia Wanat, Susan Zawaski
Our client, age 9, has spinal bifida and no control from level T2
down. He wants a riding toy that he can use. We are adapting a
riding car by providing hand controls and trunk support.
Seattle Seven
Rich Coller, Joe Olberding, Mike Ryan, Kevin Wasco
Age, arthritis, and stroke have caused tremor and other
difficulties with feeding. We are designing a portable feeder that
will assist her at mealtime.
Crescent City Twilight
Luke Hooper, Erika Jordan, Odelya Levy, Erin Riley, Can Yaman
Our client is a ventilator dependent first grader with spinal
bifida. Our system will enable him to move about the home and to
play using both arms.
Team W
Jayna Belt, Justin Guay, Daniel Palmer, Hank Routh
Older teens and young adults with spinal bifida need the skills to
drive. We are making a desktop training system that will provide
lights to be attended to and others that are distractors. When the
clients meet attention and reaction time standards, they will be
permitted to enter driver training.
Bulldog Wednesdays
Megan Kaneda, Julien Prevost, Casey Ronayne, Matt Struck
Our client is a busy professional wheelchair user who must travel
often between work sites. She has a van with a crane that can stow
her power chair, but climbing from the chair to the driver's seat
presents a problem. We are designing a van mounted lift to assist
her.
