Have you ever thought about the lives of children in the United Kingdom? This website explores this issue through the eyes of four first-year, sociology students at Tulane University. Our research shows that the government of the United Kingdom has made significant efforts to protect children. However, the country still struggles to improve children's social status by not placing into practice the standards set by important legislative documents.
We hope that our website encourages you to further research about the lives of children in the United Kingdom. We do realize, however, that our research is limited because of our lack of prior knowledge and the brief two-month time frame of our project. We encourage you to familiarize yourself with the basic ideas and content of our site and to also explore all of our links to other in-depth sources.
First of all, do you know where the country of the United Kingdom is located? The United Kingdom is located in Western Europe on islands that are between the North
Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea. The country is composed of four territories: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Its total population is nearly 60 million,
while about 80% of whom live in England. Children aged 0-14 years old make up about 18.7% of the population.
The citizens and the government consider the rights and welfare of children to be important because of their large make-up of the population. The government of the United
Kingdom has ratified important legislative documents, such as the "United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child" and the "Children Act of 1989", to improve
the opportunities available for children. However, the government is not the exclusive enforcing body of children's rights. Children themselves are also actively working to
improve their status in society.
