The Land Down Under:
Children in Australia

Welcome to our children in Australia web page. We created this page as a collaborative project for our Children & Society class at Tulane University. The purpose was to discover the current stand ard of living for children in Australia. We explored various aspects such as health, education, culture, government, and Aboriginal versus Non-Aboriginal children. Our classmates explored other countries around the world and found similiar information pertaining to their countries.

Australia together with its island neighbor, Tasmania, form the Commonwealth of Australia. Together, they are located in the Indian Ocean southeast of Asia. Australia is boarded by the Timor Sea, the Arafura Sea, and the Torres Straits to the north; th e Coral Sea and the Tasman Sea to the east; the Bass Straits and Indian Ocean to the south; and the Indian Ocean to the west. "Continental Australia" (excluding Tanzania) stretches 4025 km east to west and extends 3700 km north to south. Australia is the smallest continent in the world, however it is the sixth largest country.

Australia is split into six states-New South Whales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia. It is also split into two territories-the Australian Capital and the Northern Territory. Australia's capital, Canberra, lies in Australian Capital.

The climate differs greatly from state to state. It is tropical in the north and temperate in the south. The tropical region in the north only has two seasons-one hot and rainy and one warm and dry, whereas the southern regions have four seasons.
