This writing assignment helps students develop concrete skills in data
collection and synthesis (using conventional library resources and the
World Wide Web), critical thinking, collaboration with other student
researchers, and web page construction. These first-year college students
had no prior experience in web design.
The professor divided the class into groups of 3-4 students per group. Each group selected one country for investigation. The students had very little prior knowledge of their selected countries. Each group used the three broad themes of the course -- social structure, agency, and diversity -- as an implicit framework to guide the group's selection and presentation of information on children's lives in their selected country.
