Lone Motherhood
HousingNot
only is lone motherhood related to higher poverty rates and lower income, it is
also related to lower rates of home ownership and a greater proportion of
income spent on housing. Sixty percent of lone mothers live in rented housing,
compared to only 44% of married couples.
Furthermore,
lone mothers spend on average 30% of their income on housing; whereas married
couples spend as little as 15%. Lone mothers are also more dependent on social
housing provided by the government and cooperative living situations. Each of
these factors only further illustrates the economic problems women face as lone
mothers.
