Paternal Leave

  While Portugal’s maternal leave allows plenty of time for the mother to care for the child after birth, parental leave is limited. These leave policies have not been updated since 2004.  
  • Duration
    • 90 days for each parent
  • Payment
    • None
    • Except 15 ‘daddy days’ that are fully paid  baby in bathtub
  • Flexibility in Use
    • Non-transferable
    • Must be taken by the child’s sixth birthday
  • Eligibility
    • Same as maternity leave
  • Variation in Use
    • When there is a severely ill or handicapped child leave may be extended until the child is 12 years old and can be used for four years. This leave is paid at 65% pay.
