Paternity Leave

 

The paternity leave in Portugal is limited, however it is better than other European countries.  In addition, there has been a slow increase in the number of fathers who use their leave. While only 11% of fathers used their leave in 2000, 41% of fathers used their leave in 2006.

    • Must be taken the first 30 days after the child’s birth

    • Leave can be transferred from the mother
    • More leave may be given for sick children, ill mothers, or multiple birth
