Disaster Log Scoring for Spring 2004

I did not count such things as small earthquakes where there was no damage, only minor damage, or that occurred in isolated places where there was no possibility of damage.  I also did not count biological (unless they occurred as a secondary or tertiary effect of a primary disaster) or Anthropogenic disasters.  (In your disaster logs I have marked these as ND [Not a Disaster]). I also didn't count disasters that occurred before the beginning of the semester (January 15), unless their effects continued into the time period of the semester (Marked BC in your logs).  I also did not count a disaster where there was no location or date given.  I only counted snow avalanches if there are were 2 or more deaths.  

Based on the total number of disasters you  found, I used the frequency chart, shown below,  to determine an initial score of up to 80 points.

• Location of the Disaster
• Type of Disaster
• Beginning and ending dates and times of the disaster
• A description of the disaster and a short statement as to the cause of the disaster
• The total economic loss due to property damage, lost business, downtime, cleanup, and recovery etc.
• The total number of human casualties
• Sources of information
• Mitigation - A statement of what, if anything could have been done by humans to have prevented or reduced the economic damage and number of casualties.

Furthermore, the following appears:

"Entries in the disaster logs must be in chronological order as near as is possible.  Part of the grade will be based on the ease with which the instructor can read and grade the log - appearance will count".

In going over your disaster logs, I found that some of you did not give much information on the economic impact of the disaster, the sources of information, or what factors could have mitigated the disaster.  I awarded up to 5 points if descriptions and economic effects were given for the disasters, up to 5 points if the sources of information were given, and up to 5 points if statements on mitigation were given.  In addition up to 5 points were given on appearance and the ease of grading of the log.  Thus, the total number of points possible on the disaster log is 100.  Your score is shown on the front page of your disaster log.
