We want casual visitors to our website to understand that good music and good experimentation go hand in hand. Look at any paper in PubMed and behind every breakthrough is a savvy backbeat (and a dungeon with a dozen anonymous students, but we digress...). Here are some of our music recommendations. We would like to update this weekly, but don't actually expect that to happen for very long. |

"R a d i o h e a d have made a record."

In an act of faith that shows the band is greater than the music industry created to serve it, Radiohead will release their Oct 10, 2007 album In Rainbows via the web without a record deal (see www.inrainbows.com). You may download the album and pay whatever you want for it. Radiohead believes their true fans will reward their music efforts with the appropriate monetary donation for the download. My suggested price: Donate $10. I plan to donate $50 partly out of guilt for not rewarding the band as generously as I should have in the past for their music. The good thing is that the artist gets 100% of the revenue this way. Usually the record label keeps 80% and the artist gets 15-20%. So even if you pay just $5, you are giving Radiohead TWICE AS MUCH as their record company would have given them!)

Radio de la mer isn't an album, it's better. It's an Internet Radio Station - get a French Mediterranean diet of new and obscure music like no where else. It's part PureMoods, part classic rock/80s, part electronica, and part eclectic uncategorized stuff. For example, they were the first place I heard "Scala" - a chorus that does Nirvana and Radiohead covers with voice and piano.

Spoon - GaGaGaGa
This week we recommend Spoon's sixth album, GaGaGaGa, released in 2007. Spoon is an American indie band featuring loud guitars and rhythm. They're better than radio rock, although this album premiered at #10 on the Billboard, which is almost a mark of shame for an "Indie" band. Their music was also used on The OC and they've done the usual late night television tour as guest performers, clearly taking them out of the underground category for good. Hear them for free at http://www.myspace.com/spoon.

Flaming Lips 2002 - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
This timeless classic is being made into a Broadway musical - if you believe WikiPedia. It features electronic rock fused with lyrics and grooves, and is Flaming Lips' only gold record, as of 2006. [Are they still called Records or Albums if you rip them off the Internet as MP3s?]

The Bangles 1986 - Different Light
This Bangles album features Walk Like an Egyptian, the first ever worldwide #1 hit to top the charts by an all-female band. It is part of the playlist of over 3000 songs on RadioParadise.com - an excellent eclectic stream internet radio station.

This week we recommend the list of songs deemed inappropriate for airplay by Clear Channel Communications shortly after September 11th, 2001. If you can explain what common thread of threat these songs pose, please do so below!

Devastatin Dave The Turntable Slave
Ole' Dave makes it on most WORST ALBUM EVER lists. Dave is legendary outside of music too. In a previous lab I used to get awful service from a microscope technician whom we referred to as "Devastatin' Dave the air-table slave."

You can actually buy a whole line of Devastatin' Dave products if you really want.
Below: Can you believe this is an actual album cover? What do you think it is about? [Eventually we should add a comments part to our site so you can add your own recommendations.]
