ABMS was founded in 1993 by individuals interested in promoting social marketing activities in Benin and by several core employees of PSI/Benin. The original idea behind ABMS was to create a local NGO that would work as a partner with the PSI (Population Services International) country program. Thus, the creation of ABMS was initiated to provide low-income families with prevention-oriented health care information and appropriate primary care health products. In 1997, ABMS was collaborating with PSI/Benin in the distribution of Prudence condoms in the fight against HIV/AIDS and STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) as well as the distribution of Orasel (oral rehydration salts) to combat diarrheal disease in children. Two new products are expected to be launched in 1998 contraceptives and treated mosquito nets. ABMS is well known among the local population due to its successful marketing activities. It has successfully solicited and received grant monies from four donors in the past year, all of which were being managed by PSI/Benin administrative staff at the time of the assessment.
The SFPS Project, through the social marketing component (SFPS/SM) has provided technical support to ABMS with funds provided by USAID/Benin during FY 97. This past collaboration has helped to strengthen and expand the ABMS/PSI programs in AIDS prevention -- condom social marketing -- and in child survival through the social marketing of Orasel. Funds were also provided to sponsor ABMS/PSI staff participation in workshops and conferences with a view to providing them with improved IEC, training and social marketing skills. Future SFPS assistance will depend upon ABMS ability to reorganize and develop a strategic plan that addresses one or more aspects of SFPS results package.
