CERPOD was created in January 1988 by the Comité permanent Inter-Etats de Lutte contre la Sécheresse dans le Sahel (CILSS). CILSS oversees two specialized entities: The Institut du Sahel (INSAH) and the Centre régional de formation et d’application en agro-météorologie et en hydrologie opérationnelle (AGRHYMET). INSAH, which was founded in December 1976 and is headquartered and located in Bamako, Mali, supervises all the activities of CERPOD as well as that of another Major Program: AGROSOC.

One of the Major Programs of CILSS is the Population and Development program (CERPOD). The center is unique in the region with its program to integrate population in development through research, training, and technical assistance. CERPOD’s mission is to propose options/strategies to remove/lessen the demographic constraints to sustainable development in the Sahel. This mission is carried out by three entities of CERPOD – the divisions of research, operations, and institutional development.

The operations research component of the SFPS Project (SFPS/OR) selected CERPOD as a partner institution with the goal of establishing the institute as a center of excellence for operations research in the West and Central African region. Collaboration in the past year focused on regional OR training and comparative secondary data analyses. In the future, SFPS/OR may focus on building skills in geographic information systems (GIS), qualitative research methodologies, and experimental or quasi-experimental design studies. These activities will greatly contribute to enhancing CERPOD’s comparative advantage as a regional resource center of excellence.
