The Ecole Nationale de Statistique et dEconomie Appliquée (ENSEA) was established in 1982 by law decree 82.219 and evolved from the original institution created in 1961, the Ecole dApplication de la Direction de la Statistique et des Etudes Economiques de Côte dIvoire. The mission of ENSEA is to provide high-level degree education in statistics and applied economics to all African francophone countries south of the Sahara to pursue applied research activities in the same subject areas.
ENSEA had approximately 195 students enrolled in the 1995/1996 academic year. The school provides 4 levels of degree programs:
ENSEA is the only statistical training school in sub-Saharan Africa that simultaneously provides these 4 levels of training to all francophone countries in the region. Job prospects are excellent for graduates; the degree is very specialized and rigorous as well as applied and thus graduates are immediately ready to engage in professional life. The ISE program has been recently modified with a raising of entrance qualifications and shortening of the program duration from 3 to 2 years.
The SFPS Project through the operations research component (SFPS/OR) plans to support ENSEA becoming a center of excellence for operations research in the West and Central African region. Collaboration in the past year has brought OR training into the ENSEA curriculum. In the future, SFPS/OR plans, through the provision of networking and e-mail software, technical support and training, to make internal e-mail available to the ENSEA community and to provide internet connectivity through a local service provider. Additional training will also be offered to assist ENSEA in developing and maintaining websites for their own as well as other African partner institutions. These activities will comprise a significant part of ENSEAs ongoing work and as such will have a great deal of impact on the organization's research capacity.
