This area of concentration explores the social, economic, and cultural forces that shape the organization and dynamics of family life, how these forces differently affect the experiences and perspectives of women/girls and men/boys, the reproduction of gender and age inequalities, the social construction of identity, and the ideological underpinnings of socially and historically contingent definitions of family, youth, and gender. Faculty in this area are engaged in research on attitudes toward children and work-family issues (Brayfield), family politics and policy (Adams), gender-based political and social movements (Viterna), gender and sexuality (Schippers), transition to adulthood (Fussell), and adolescent development and juvenile delinquency (Brezina). Adams, Brayfield, Fussell, Schippers, and Viterna are also affiliated with the Women's Studies Program and the Newcomb Center for Research on Women . updated May 20, 2004
