This homework is due by the last regular class period, December 1st, at 5:45 PM. If you complete this assignment and turn it
in by December 1st, your grade will be returned to you at the
time of the exam.
ASSIGNMENT:
- Register for a web page account at studentweb.tulane.edu.
This is accomplished online at address http://studentweb.tulane.edu/register.html
via WWW. NOTE: You MUST have an account on rs6000.tcs.tulane.edu
to be granted an account on studentweb. If you do not have an
rs6000 account, you can either apply for one at Richardson hall
or you can turn in your project to me via email for grading (in
which case it will NOT be posted on the web for others to access).
Please allow enough time (several days) for your account to be
created.
- Create your web page as a file called index.htm (DOS/Windows 3.x) or index.html
(Unix, Mac, Win 95/NT). Your file must be properly formatted html (a
pure text file, and not stored in the format of some Word Processor
such as Microsoft Word or WordPerfect), and include the following
elements (not necessarily in any order -- be creative):
- A title (appears in the bar at the top of the web browser)
- A main heading at the top (centered and large text -- perhaps
use H1)
- Three links to other sites on the web. Each link should include
descriptive text.
- A link to the main StudentWeb page, with graphic icon. The
site to be referenced is http://studentweb.tulane.edu and the
image to use is http://studentweb.tulane.edu/images/studentweb/sw_box.gif
- Some text about most any topic you choose, perhaps about yourself,
your major, your web page, your interests, or something else you
choose. Use the following stylistic elements in your text: bold
or italics, at least 3 font sizes (you can use the heading or
font tags), and a list of any type.
- Apply some color to your page, either by defining background
and/or text and link colors, or by using a pre-drawn background.
Some sample colors (but feel free to use others) may be found
at http://studentweb.tulane.edu/images/colors/ and some backgrounds
you can use (but feel free to use others if you desire) may be
found at http://studentweb.tulane.edu/images/backgrounds/
- If you choose, your web site can consist of more than 1 file,
but this is not necessary.
- (IF YOU HAVE AN ACCOUNT ON STUDENTWEB)
- Transfer your web page file(s) to studentweb.tulane.edu using
ftp.
- Place the file(s) in the subdirectory public_html underneath
your home directory.
- Telnet to studentweb.tulane.edu and login to your account.
Change directories to the public_html directory via the command
"cd public_html"
- If you named your main web page file something other than
index.html (i.e. index.htm if you created it on a DOS/Windows
machine) you must rename it. Use the command "mv <oldname>
<newname> " to change the file name. For example,
to change file index.htm into index.html you would use the command
"mv index.htm index.html"
- Give others access to your web page by setting access rights.
using the chmod command. For example to set rights for the file
index.html, the command would be "chmod 644 index.html"
- Turn in to me either via paper copy or via email to msonnier@mailhost.tcs.tulane.edu
something indicating your assignment is complete, and the address
where I can find it on studentweb. (e.g. something of the form
http://studentweb.tulane.edu/~yourid/index.html )
- (IF YOU DO NOT HAVE AN ACCOUNT ON STUDENTWEB)
- Turn in a copy of your html file(s) either via DOS formatted
diskette (3.5" preferred but I'll take a 5.25") or via
attachment to an email to msonnier@mailhost.tcs.tulane.edu (Make
sure your text file is truly a text file, and not formatted for
some specific word processor.) A good way to test this is: If
the DOS Edit command can read and view the file, its a text file...
- Assignments turned in this way will be graded the same as
those on studentweb, but will not be posted anywhere for others
on the Web to see and admire.
This assignment is worth a total of 40 points. Grades will be
assigned based on the following criteria:
- adheres to the requirements of the assignment, (i.e. includes
the required elements)
- correctness of the HTML format (i.e. Netscape version 2.0
or newer can read and properly display it)
- creativity, organization, and aesthetics of your web page
(subjective)
If you have questions or problems, you can email me at msonnier@mailhost.tcs.tulane.edu
