May 5 FINAL EXAM (9 a.m. - Noon)

Student Evaluation

Students will be evaluated on their participation in class discussion (10%), a scribal report (10%), an in-class book report (10%), a written book review (20%), a research paper (25%), and a final examination (25%). Two students will sign up to be scribes for each class period; the first student will take notes for the first hour of class, the second student for the second. These students will prepare a written report of their notes by the next class meeting. Each student will be required to present a 15-20 minute report in class on a book which focuses on some aspect of magic or the supernatural in the ancient world. This book should be chosen from the Additional Reading for one of the class periods after Feb. 3. No more than 3 students will present book reports in each class period. Students will choose the book they intend to review by Feb. 3. A written book review of the chosen work will be due at the class meeting following the in-class presentation. Each student will also write a 10-12 page research paper with complete scholarly apparatus (footnotes and bibliography). A paragraph describing the research topic and a preliminary bibliography of the topic are due on Mar. 10. The term paper should be on a different topic than the book chosen for the in-class presentation and written review. The research paper is due on April 21. A final examination for the course will be given on Mon., May 5, from 9 a.m. to noon.
