Jefferson Davis of Mississippi was inaugurated President of the Confederacy on February 18. The inaugural ceremony took place on the steps of the Montgomery capitol before an audience estimated at ten thousand people. A band entertained the crowd by playing "Dixie," a minstrel tune which was performed for the first time on this occasion as a band arrangement.
