Cataloging Books for the Math Library

Introduction

This document lists the distinctive procedures to be followed when cataloging books that are being sent to the Math Library.

It applies to all levels of cataloging -- both copy and original -- and is intended to supplement the general procedures covered in the following documents:

• Voyager MARC Holdings Record
• Voyager Item Records
• The Physical Piece:  Writing Numbers, Stickups, Etc.

For additional questions, please consult these documents or ask your trainer.

Special procedures for Math

Catalog books for the Math Library as you would any other books, with the following exceptions:

1. Location code:  MARC Holdings record 852 ‡b math.  Confirm that this code is correct.

2. Call number:
   • Bib record:  Do not spend time verifying or shelflisting a call number.   Accept any LC call number present in the record.

   • MARC Holdings record:
     • 852 1st indicator: Set as 8 -- must be correct to index properly!

     • 852 ‡h call number subfield:  simply MATH -- as shown below.

   • T.p. verso:  Write only “MATH” in place of a full call number.

     

3. Item record:
   • Locations and Call number:  Confirm that the 3 fields for Location, Perm. Loc., and Call# all display MATH -- as shown below.

   • Item Type:  MAbook -- as shown below.

   

4. Physical processing:
   • Do not send for binding!

     However:  Put piggyback barcode in all Math Library paperbacks.

   • Place on the shelf in the Processing area that is designated for MATH books (among other special locations).
