These introductory notes on the treatment of multivolume monographic titles primarily apply to copy cataloguing where the bib record is concerned. For holdings and item records, the information applies to original cataloguing, as well.
The basic distinction between multivolume monographs and analyzed series is that with multivolume monographs, all volumes are in one bib record. (For additional introductory information on analyzed series, see "Notes on Series Treatment in Cataloguing.")
Possibilities for multivolume publication
Possibilities for our holdings of the multivolume publication in comparison with existing copy
Check all volumes; the main source of information should be the first v. (or first available v.). If later volumes have differences, record when possible in a 505 contents note. If differences cannot be accommodated in the 505 note, see Olga or your trainer.
When DLC has information in angle brackets (e.g., <1>), delete information and brackets.
|[date].||E.g. 2003.||(complete; all published in the same year)|
|[beginning date]-[ending date].||E.g. 1991-1999.||(complete; published over multiple years)|
|[beginning date]-||E.g. 2002-||(incomplete)|
|single date:||Date 1 = date||E.g. 2003||(complete)|
|multiple dates:||Date 1=beginning date; Date 2=ending date||E.g. 1991,1999||(complete)|
|multiple dates:||Date1=beginning date; Date 2=9999||E.g. 2002,9999||(incomplete)|
|[number of] v.||E.g. 4 v.||complete, pagination not continuous through set|
|[number of] v. ([no. of] p.)||E.g. 5 v. (xii, 2472 p.)||complete, continuous pagination through set|
In this situation, for complete holdings, give: <no. of bibliographic volumes> v. in <no. of physical volumes>.
If the holdings are incomplete, just put: "v. in "
$b: An ill. statement can be accepted if any volumes have illustrations.

In this situation, the volume number in the 852 call number, in the item record Enum field, and on the spine should reflect the series volume number.
