Service and Philanthropy

Court Appointed Special Advocates, also known as CASA, is a philanthropic organization devoted to representing children in court custody cases, where the would not have a voice in court otherwise. Volunteers from the community, called Special Advocates, speak for the best interest of abused and neglected children in court. "CASAs", as they are called, enter the child's daily living environment and meet with important people in the child's life. After learning about the child's home life, the Special Advocate can speak in court and make recommendations to the court that are the best for the children. Currently, CASA has a network of over 50,000 volunteers working with over 225,000 children. There are over 900 program offices, including an office in the New Orleans area.

Nationally, Kappa Alpha Theta raises the most money for CASA. The Tulane Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta also works hard on the local level. For the past two years, the Alpha Phi chapter hosted four Charity Denim fund raisers, raising over $6,000 for CASA New Orleans. Charity Denim is a non-profit company, based out of Utah, that helps organizations raise money for philanthropies be selling discounted designer jeans at a site of their choosing. Every year, Theta sisters participate to make this event successful. Our chapter looks forward to another successful jean sale this Spring at the Theta house.

Thetas also participate in the bi-annual Outreach Tulane, where students volunteer to pain public schools, clean up neighborhoods, gut houses, and work on Habitat for Humanity homes. Thetas, along with many other Tulane students, visit many areas of New Orleans from the French Quarter to Mid-City. Kappa Alpha Theta also organizes group service projects in the New Orleans area ranging from book drives, holiday angel trees, and paint rallies.

For the past two years, Kappa Alpha Theta participated in the annual Relay for Life, hosted at Tulane by the American Cancer Society. Theta came in second place overall for fundraising in 2007. Led by our Service Chair, Tulane Thetas stayed up all night walking the track and selling lemonade to participants. The "E-Lemon-Ate Cancer" booth was a huge success!

In February 2008, Theta teamed up with Dilliard University's Delta Sigma Theta Sorority to put on a step show with other Tulane and Xavier Greek organizations. Theta won the "Not Another Step Show" and donated the $1000 to our philanthropy, CASA.

Vitually the entire chapter turned out to support our step team, and filled a section of the stands! We were so proud of our team and the Deltas for all their hard work!
