If You Are Raped

If you are raped, it is important to:

Get medical attention.
Find and maintain a support system (a rape hotline is a good place to start).
Report the crime to the police.

To aid the police investigation, take these steps to preserve evidence:

If the rape has just occurred, do not shower or bathe before the medical examination.
Until the police have dusted the fingerprints, try not to touch any smooth surfaces, such as telephones, that the rapist may have touched.
Save all of your clothing and personal items from the crime and tell the police what you have.
Document any injury you suffered, either by photograph or by showing it to someone you trust.

After the rape, put an answering machine on your telephone and let it answer your calls. If the rapist calls (this happens more than you might think), save the tape.

Do Not try to trap or confront your rapist on your own. If you might have further contact with the rapist, discuss that with the police before it happens.

If you can find the strength - prosecute.

Guidelines for Friends, Parents, Lovers and Spouses

BELIEVE THEM.
Listen to them.
Give comfort.
Reinforce that the rape was not their fault.
Provide protection.
Suggest calling a rape crisis center or.
Encourage the survivor to preserve evidence.
Treat medical needs.
LET THE SURVIVOR MAKE DECISIONS ABOUT HOW TO PROCEED.
Use appropriate touching and language to reestablish the survivor's feelings of worth.
Help the survivor to get psychological help.
Be available.
Learn about rape-trauma syndrome.
Get help for yourself.
