Tulane Men Against Rape
"We're all in this together."
General Tips:

  • Know the facts!! The more you know, the safer you'll be.
  • Always be concious of your surroundings.
  • Whenever you go out, make sure you let someone know where you're going, and who you're going with. Do not go out alone, it is easier to be victimized if no one will miss you or notice a change in your behavior.
  • If you feel uncomfortable in any situation, leave.
  • Listen to your friends, especially if they say they feel uncomfortable in any situation or with certain people.
  • Remember that 66% of rapes are committed by somebody the victim knows.
  • Approximately 48% of victims are raped by a friend or acquaintance; 30% by a stranger; 16% by an intimate (that includes boyfriends ladies!); 2% by another relative; and in 4% of cases the relationship is unknown
  • Carry a cell phone and use it.
  • Never accept drinks from anyone other than a bartender or waiter/waitress.
  • Never leave your drink unattended.
  • If a drink is coming from a punch bowl, make sure that men as well as women are drinking from the bowl. If a male won'’t drink it, neither should you!
  • Park in a well lit area, especially if you'’ll be going to your car after dark.
  • Never pull over in a less populated area, even if it seems to be for a cop, use a cell phone and call the dispatcher and alert them to your situation, some predators have used this ploy to isolate their victims in remote areas.
  • Lock your doors and windows, both car and house/apartment/dorm room, at all times.
  • Keep your purse small and manageable. Large purses are more likely to attract predators. If possible, go without a purse.
  • Never walk alone after dark, even on campus.
  • Do NOT let strangers into your building, even if they claim they live there, make them find someone who knows them to let them in.
  • Feel free to dress however you want, but be aware of the reactions your outfit may evoke.
  • Do not wear clothes you'’re uncomfortable in, it will be harder to defend yourself if it becomes necessary.
  • IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU. 1 in 6 women in the United States is a victim of rape in their lifetime. Think of you and 5 women you know. One of you will be raped in your lifetime.
  • Do not be afraid to say “NO”. Anyone worth your time, will take “NO” for an answer.
  • Take a Self-Defense class. R.A.D. courses are offered on campus through TUPD, Tulane R.A.D.
  • Keep informed of what is happening on campus with the CrimeAlert system.
  • Educate yourself about Date Rape Drugs.
  • Rape and other sexual assaults are NOT your fault!
  • If you are sexually assaulted, report it and talk to someone about it who is trained to help.
