The Tulane Science Scholars Program (TSSP) Summer 2008 Opportunity is a selective program for high school students who have exceptional talent in the sciences and mathematics. It is a pilot program open to public school students in the Orleans Parish area. This summer session will focus on the field of Neuroscience, which is the study of the brain. Neuroscientists study everything from the electrical activity of individual brain cells to the behavior of animals and people. TSSP students will have the opportunity to learn the same techniques and use the same equipment that Tulane neuroscientists use in their own research. Laboratory activities that will be supervised by Tulane faculty members and their students will include the following:
The summer
program will be on Monday, July 7th
– Friday, July 11th, from 9 am – 12:30 pm. This
program has a $50 fee, which can be waived in cases of financial hardship.
The TSSP is now accepting nominations for the 2008 summer
program. Nominees should currently be in
the 10th or 11th grade (in an extraordinary case, a 9th grader will be considered) and have a
strong interest in science and mathematics.
The TSSP will select a maximum of
12 students for the program. The
selection of students will be based upon the following information:
1. Student Essay
2. Teacher Recommendation
3. School Transcript

consult with your science teacher, math teacher, or guidance counselor.

These forms are to be completed and returned directly to the
TSSP. Participants will be notified by

The Tulane Science Scholars Program (TSSP) is a selective
program for (public and private) high school students who have exceptional
talent in the sciences and mathematics.
The TSSP will hold classes at Tulane from 10 am – 12 noon on
Saturdays during the 2008-2009 academic year.
The classes will meet 8 times between September 6th and
November 22nd, 2008 and 8 times between January 24th and
April 25th, 2009. Instructors
are science, mathematics, and engineering faculty members who are actively
engaged in research. Courses will
involve a combination of lecture and hands-on experience. The specific topics
have not been finalized; however, courses in the past have included:

This program has a $250 fee, which may be waived in cases of
financial hardship.

entering the 11th grade or 12th grade (in an
extraordinary case, a 10th grader will be considered) and have a strong interest in science and
mathematics. The TSSP will select a
maximum of 50 students for the program.
