How to apply for the 2009 summer program:

(for 2009-10 academic year program, see below)

The Tulane Science Scholars Program (TSSP) Summer 2009 Opportunity is a selective program for high school students who have exceptional talent in the sciences and mathematics.  This summer session will focus on the field of Neuroscience, which is the study of the brain.  Neuroscientists study everything from the electrical activity of individual brain cells to the behavior of animals and people.  TSSP students will have the opportunity to learn the same techniques and use the same equipment that Tulane neuroscientists use in their own research.  Laboratory activities that will be supervised by Tulane faculty members and their students will include the following:

Learn basic brain anatomy by studying actual human brain specimens

  • Learn basic brain anatomy by studying actual human brain specimens
  • Learn how to test the effects of various drugs on the behaviors of rats
  • Learn how to prepare brain tissue for study under a microscope
  • Learn how to measure specific brain chemicals
  • Learn how to measure human brain waves

The 7 day summer program will be held on Tulane University’s campus on Monday, July 6th, through Thursday, July 9th, and Monday, July 13th, through Wednesday, July 15th, from 9:30 am – 12:00 noon.  This program has a $100 fee, which can be waived in cases of financial hardship.  The TSSP is now accepting applications for the 2009 summer program.  Applicants should currently be in the 10th or 11th grade (in an extraordinary case, a 9th grader will be considered) and have a strong interest in science and mathematics.  The TSSP will select a maximum of 12 students for the program.  The selection of students will be based upon the following information:

·         1.  Student Essay

·         2.  Teacher Recommendation

·         3.  School Transcript

If you are interested in applying to this program, you should consult with your science teacher, math teacher, or guidance counselor for a recommendation.  Participants will be notified by May 31, 2009.  The forms for the 2008-09 academic year can also be downloaded in PDF format using the following links:
