Goals:

Goals of the Institute

The Goals of the Porter-Cason Institute of the Tulane School of Social Work are:

  • To be recognized as a center of excellence in the design of learning for service and advocacy for children, families, and communities
  • To be a leader in social work education nationally in its approach to family practice
  • To utilize the best teaching/learning practices in all of its programs
  • To be a well-known resource for state-of-the-art approaches to innovative family practice by:
    • Disseminating knowledge and information about best practices in
      teaching/learning family practice to an international audience via the World Wide Web and other media
    • Receiving substantial external funding for development of best
      practices in teaching/learning family practice
    • Attracting and retaining the best teachers and scholars of pedagogy for
      professional practice with families
    • Becoming a major resource for faculty development for teaching/learning for service and advocacy for families
    • Providing teaching/learning family practice design programs and workshops for educators and practitioners
    • Fully integrating the latest and best information communication technology (ICT) into all of its learning programs

Strategic Directions

  • Enhancing the quality of family practice programs, community partnerships, and lifelong learning through judicious and strategic use of Porter-Cason resources
  • Raising the funds needed for new family practice teaching/learning initiatives and enhancements

Short-term Goals - One to three years

  • Continue faculty development program through the Institute's annual Faculty Fellowship award begun in 2000
  • Continue to design and conduct workshops for social work practitioners in innovative concepts for family practice
  • Design and conduct major conference/symposium on Care at the End of Life
  • Secure funding for and implement major teaching/learning family practice project - 2002-2003
  • Support and collaborate with Wisner Research Center in developing an advanced family practice casebook
  • Support and collaborate in developing programs with the Tulane Center for Aging and the Gary-Lloyd Institute
  • Conduct mini-think tank on status of family practice and innovative approaches to family casework - 2003
  • Create laboratory for best practices in family practice
