WEB Databases
The following databases can be accessed through the World Wide Web from a Tulane account, either from the Turchin Library Home Pages or from the Howard-Tilton Pages. Other databases are available, but the following will be of interest to Freeman affiliated students and faculty.
1. Dow-Jones Interactive: Includes full text of the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Baron's, National Business Employment Weekly and the Financial Times. Also includes current quotes, market data, and company and industry reports from over 3500 publications, including newspapers and magazines.
2. ABI/Inform (Proquest Direct): Provides index and some full text/image coverage of 1000 business journals and magazines from 1970 to the present. Searchable by keywords, author, journal, subject, and company.
3. Business & Industry: Facts, figures, trends, forecasts for public and private companies, industries, and markets. Includes full text and abstracts from over 600 trade magazines, newsletters, and newspapers in 30 countries. Non-English articles include an abstract in English.
4. Disclosure's Global Access: Global Access provides access to company facts and figures. It gathers information from SEC reports such as official annual business and financial reports, quarterly income statements, reports of unscheduled material events, company proxy statements, annual reports to shareholders, registration statements, tender offers and acquisition reports.
5. National Trade Data Bank (NTDB): The NTDB contains a number of databases produced by the U.S. Commerce Department, and is available through STAT-USA. Heavily researched topics include import/export statistics, international market research reports, and country business plans.
6. First Call's Research Direct : Earnings estimates and brokers notes on domestic and international equities and industries. Tulane users only.
7. Zacks' University Analyst Watch: Zacks provides coverage of
6,000+ publicly traded companies. The research is compiled from over 3,000
analysts at more than 240 different brokerage houses. Relevant data
servicing all disciplines of business (i.e. Finance, Accounting,
Management, and Marketing)
8. EconoLit: Subject indexing and abstracts of over 400 journals, over 500 collective volumes per year plus books, dissertations, and working papers. January 1969 to the present. Updated monthly. This is the electronic version of the Journal of Economic Literature.
9. PsychInfo: Index and abstracts of psychology journal articles, as well as book chapters. This will include many journals that publish in the area of organizational behavior.
10. Books in Print: 1.8+ million records of in-print, out-of-print, and forthcoming books from over 44,000 North American publishers. Updated weekly.
11. Britannica Online: Consists of a fully searchable and browsable collection of authoritative references, including Britannica's latest article database, hundreds of articles not found in the print Britannica, Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary (Tenth Edition), the Britannica Book of the Year, and thousands of links to other World Wide Web sites selected by Britannica editors.
12. JSTOR: A collection of full-text, academic journals, including
several in economics.
Networked CD-ROMs
1. Value Line Investment Survey: An electronic version of the print product which is designed to analyze and select stocks. Functions such as sorting, filtering, graphing and reporting are available with the software and portfolios can be created and compared. An exact reproduction of the print version can also be viewed. Records can be downloaded or printed.
2. Moody's Company Data: Information on US Companies including financials, officers, and subsidiaries. Corresponds to the printed Moody's Manuals.
3. Moody's International Company Data: Information on International Companies. Corresponds to the Moddy's International Manual.
4. Morningstar Mutual Funds: Statistical profiles of the most important mutual funds, including description and analysis, basic operating facts, several years of statistics for total return, income, capital gains, performance/risk, 13-year historical financial statistics, portfolio holdings, % loan, yield, total assets, NAV, and a Morningstar rating. Updated quarterly.
5. ValueLine Investment Survey: Includes Ratings & Reports, the full-page company profile reports; Selection & Opinion, the weekly Value Line newsletter; and Summary & Index, the data listing for all stocks followed by Value Line.
6. Standard & Poor's Industry Surveys. Quarterly cumulation of weekly reports issued by S&P on 52 industries. Includes charts, graphs, and text on recent developments, industry basics, and comparative company analysis within each industry.
7. PC Plus (Compustat): A sophisticated microcomputer software program that allows you to access, select, and present data. The database includes financial and market data for individual corporations, business segments and industry composites. Some of the functions available include generating competitive analyses, developing corporate planning strategies, evaluating the performance of strategic business, performing credit analysis, analyzing divestiture candidates, managing investment portfolios, developing marketing strategies and evaluating a company's vulnerability to mergers or acquisitions.
8. Financial Accounting Research System: Enables fast, comprehensive research on accounting guidelines. It contains information from AICPA Accounting Interpretations, Accounting Terminology Bulletins, Accounting Research Bulletins, Accounting Principles Board Opinions, Accounting Principles Board Statements, FASB Statements, FASB Interpretations, FASB Technical Bulletins and FASB Concept Statements.
9. American Business Disc: Directory information on more than 10.5 million American businesses.
10. International Financial Statistics: Statistical information
from the IMF, updated monthly.
Online Databases
1. Bloomberg: Bloomberg provides information on financial market and commodity news. Major subject areas include equity valuation and derivatives, portfolio analysis, cross currency analysis, technical analysis, bond valuation, bond swaps and switches, and futures and options. There is online help available within the equity sector, as well as an expert help file. There are also occasional Bloomberg workshops offered by MBA students. Use of the Bloomberg computer is restricted to Freeman students, alumni, faculty, and staff, and terminals are located within the library.
2. Lexis/Nexis: Provides full text articles from over 1000 newspapers, periodicals, and government publications; subjects range from business and law to medicine and music. Printed guides are available, as well as handouts in the library on basic searching techniques. Small-group introduction sessions are offered in the library on an occasional basis. Use of LEXIS-NEXIS is restricted to Freeman students, alumni, faculty, and staff, and is available only from Turchin library.
3 . Dialog: Knight-Ridder's Dialog library of over 600 databases
draws from a broad scope of disciplines ranging from news and travel to
scientific research and patents. Group or individual instruction is necessary
to begin searching any of the Dialog databases. Dialog usage is restricted
to Freeman students, working on course-related subjects, and is available
only from the library.
TULANET Databases
1. OPAC: The OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) is Tulane's Web-based catalog of books, microforms, government documents, and periodical titles owned by all of the Tulane libraries, except for the Law Library. The Law Library is also searchable via telent through the Web from the Tulane Home Page.
2. DOLD & DNEW: These collections of indexes are accessed through Tulanet and contain citations to journal articles on topics indexed through Applied Science and Technology Index, Business Periodicals Index, General Science Index, Humanities Index, Social Sciences Index, and Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature.
3. PAIS: PAIS is made available through Tulanet. It contains
a selective list of books, periodical articles, government documents, and
reports relating to economic and social conditions, public policy and administration,
international relations and business. Emphasis is on factual and statistical
information. The coverage of the index is international, and material is
included in English, French, Spanish, German, and Portuguese. Citations
date from 1972 to the present.

Ward's Private Company Profiles. DIR HF 5035 .W37 Contains basic company data, and excerpts from local and regional newspapers, periodicals, and trade journals.
Hoover's Handbook of American Business. DIR HG 4057 .A28617 Profiles of 500 of the largest companies in America. Includes a number of lists, including Fortune 500 companies, largest companies within specific industries.

U.S. Industry Profiles: the Leading 100. IND HC 102 .S828 1998 Profiles 100 industries and leading companies within these industries. Within each industry there is a list of associations & societies, periodicals & newsletters, databases, statistical sources, general works, and a bibliography of material for further reading.
Standard & Poor's Monthly Investment Review. IND HG 4961 .S7 A monthly review and price graphs for 115 industries, along with recent financial information on the leading companies within each of the industries and a buy/sell rating.
Standard & Poor's Industry Surveys. IND HG 4961 .S74 Quarterly cumulation of weekly reports issued by S&P on 52 industries. Includes charts, graphs, and text on recent developments, industry basics, and comparative company analysis within each industry.
Moody's Industry Review. IND HG 4961 .M75 A biweekly looseleaf service, this publication covers 137 industry groups. It includes a ranked list of companies in each industry according to 12 key financial, operating, and investment criteria, in addition to a comparison of financial statistics for the leading companies.
IndustriScope. FIN HG 4915 .M5 A monthly publication which compares financial figures of companies within industry groups. Includes stock price, price change, relative price, share holdings, revenue, earnings, dividends and ratio analysis.
Service Industries USA. IND HD 9981.1 .S47 Presents analytical data on the domestic service industry. Covers 151 industries arranged by SIC. Lists general statistics, selected ratios, leading companies, occupation % within the industry, and data by state.

handbooks describe individual companies, including history, products and
services, sales, names of officers, number of employees, rankings in the

and a Hoover's ranking. Some of this information is available from Hoover's

Moody's Manuals. FIN HG 4961.M7 Provides financials, a brief history, capital structure and other information on U.S. public and international companies. Concise, one-page reports issued weekly, include stock charts, business
background and recent developments covering 1700 companies. The Expanded
Edition includes another 1800 stocks. Each industry group is revised quarterly.

FINANCIAL RATIOS
Almanac of Business and Industrial Financial Ratios. IND HF 5681 .R25 T68 This annual publication lists financial and operating ratios for industry groups, arranged by SIC code, based on information released by the IRS. It therefore includes all corporations which are required to file tax returns, although the data is slow to be released by the IRS.
Industry Norms and Key Business Ratios. IND HF 5681.R25D8 Contains balance sheets and income statements as well as "common size" financial figures for 5 different industries. Also provides 14 indicators of performance in the areas of solvency, efficiency and profitability.
RMA Annual Statement Studies. IND HF 5681 .B2 R6 Financial and operating ratios for 425 industries. Information is obtained from member banks, and only companies with less than $250 million are included. A bibliography of sources of composite financial data is also included.
Standard & Poor's Analysts' Handbook. IND HG 4961.S77 Provides per share amounts for selected income account and balance sheet items. Calculations are derived from the S&P industry group stock price indexes from 1960 to date.
