Programs and Projects

We work with individuals and communities on a variety of programs and projects related to women’s health. Key activities include community-driven health initiatives, leadership initiatives, health promotion programs, advancing a women’s health agenda, and facilitating research.

Wellness Talks and Outreach: As a health education center, our priority is to provide accurate and clear health information to the women and families of New Orleans. The Mary Amelia Center conducts outreach through health fairs and local events and by providing wellness talks through our Jane Wilson Smith Wellness Talk series. (More)

STAND: The STAND Project seeks to raise awareness for and rebuild social support systems that were lost or broken up since the storm. We work with community members, organizations, churches and agencies to look for ways to help people come together to support, talk and listen to each other.  Whether it is in groups or one-on-one, at a community center or in someone’s home, these social connections are an important part of a healthy life. Creating Community Connections: To enhance our understanding of the communities with which we work and to forge new connections with them, we are engaging those communities in a sharing and learning project called Creating Community Connections. The project focuses on three significant local neighborhoods: Algiers, Treme and St. Bernard parish. (More)

Healthy TV: Low health literacy impacts nearly half of all American adults and is especially high among seniors. Healthy TV is an innovative computer-based multimedia program coupling low-literacy health education and technology to educate seniors on diabetes. The program is being piloted in Mercy Endeavors Senior Center in the Lower Garden District. (More)
