About TUXCOE

In October 1998 the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Office of Women’s Health awarded TUXCOE the designation as a National Center of Excellence (CoE) to “support innovative national model program projects for comprehensive and coordinated women’s health care, public and health care professional education, and research.” 

TUXCOE is a collaborative effort of Tulane University Health Sciences Center (TUHSC) and Xavier University of Louisiana (Xavier). TUXCOE pulls from the clinical, academic and educational missions of our collaborating institutions to build an effective community network and partnership towards the improvement of women’s health.

TUXCOE’s ultimate vision is mental and physical wellbeing for all women across the lifespan. 

TUXCOE’s mission is to enhance women’s health and well-being through communication, prevention and leadership.

TUXCOE recently acquired a new building that houses the entire Center of Excellence. The Center has various functions which include providing professional education, developing strategies to promote leadership development, providing outreach to the community, and initiating and coordinating the research of women’s health issues. In order to achieve these functions TUXCOE embraces the Mary Amelia Douglas-Whited Community Women’s Health Education Center; the Total Woman Health Care Center and the Tulane Interdisciplinary Sex, Gender, and Women’s Health Research Center. As a mother of four, and a sculptor, Cecile Weil Usdin was a lifelong member of the New Orleans community, and a 1946 Newcomb College graduate. She was a strong advocate for women’s rights and donated countless hours to the Council of Jewish Women, American Red Cross, Second Harvester Food Bank, among others.
