Degrees & Programs:
Computer Literacy Certification

The Louisiana Department of Education allows certified K-12 teachers to instruct in computer literacy if they hold this certification – upon successful completion of the following courses.

1. Introduction to Microcomputers (UEDT/UINS 100/3 credits) Using microcomputer hardware and a graphical user interface, the course introduces fundamental concepts and principles of computing with microcomputers. Students learn file maintenance, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentation software; they learn how to use these technologies to perform functional tasks that most teachers need to perform.

2. Working with the Internet (UEDT/UINS 227/3 credits) Prerequisite: UINS 100 or equivalent learning experiences. By understanding how to utilize the vast resources of the Internet, teachers will learn how to integrate the World Wide Web into their curriculum planning. Online lesson plans, collaborative projects, keypals, Internet faculty centers, and a myriad of multicultural opportunities are just a few of the topics that will be discussed. Lectures will be supplemented with hands-on exercises that require active exploration of the WWW.

3. Software Integration in Education (UEDT/UINS 256/3 credits) Prerequisite: UINS 100 or equivalent knowledge of Windows or Macintosh computer systems and use of word processors. Teachers gain an understanding of how to integrate the use of educational software resources into their teaching methods. Sample topics include: identifying types of software and developing criteria for evaluating software; integrating software use with curriculum goals and designing lessons for transfer of learning; planning and implementing technology-related lessons; classroom management techniques for one-computer and multi-computer environments.

Computer Science Certification

Completion of any three programming classes (UCIS 160 through 299) ordinarily qualifies a certified teacher for this add-on certificate endorsement. Consult the Department of Education, State of Louisiana.
